Dated Kitchen Cabinets; What to do?!?!?!

Investing in your kitchen is a worthwhile endeavor. Not only do you spend an inordinate amount of time there relative to other rooms and your life, but investing in your kitchen can transform your personal attitude, elevate your cooking enjoyment, and provide a boost to your home equity if you're a homeowner.

Kitchens are the hub of home and family life. Their central to our emotional, physical, and social health. When you enter your kitchen, you should feel as though you've entered a magical space, one where the dishes you create bring laughter, smiles, and health throughout the years. A kitchen's energy is never just in the kitchen. It's the one room that travels and beckons unconstrained, slipping through every room unannounced with tantalizing smells and the sharp cutting block sounds of hunger's master.

I can say for certain that I had some of my worst food in college on a consistent basis and the kitchen were often tiny and very messy. That relationship should not be understated. If you don't have a well-organized, well-designed kitchen, one that makes you feel good to be in there throwing hot pans around like a juggler, then it's hard to have the energy to cook/make healthy meals. You simply do not want to be in there. And your health generally suffers. Luckily I was so young in college that my body was not in trouble long term. Still, our kitchen was a mess and not a few times, arguments would break out between my college roommates over dirty dishes--mostly mine. My point is that our cramped and dirty kitchen led to social issues between us. They weren't large but it also wasn't the optimum situation for a young college student either--at this point I was on academic probation. My point is to say that my culinary ideal of a good meal was a beer and a 7-11 chicken sandwich.

There's a strong relationship between space and energy as perceived through our many senses--such as taste, smell, and sight. If you aren't eating healthy, it's hard to be in a great situation either physically and socially. A welcoming kitchen, open, and well-designed in both color, cabinet design, and floor plan, goes a long way towards creating a space to grow not only your cooking skills, but a healthy circle of friends and family.

Investing in a kitchen remodel or the more affordable kitchen cabinet/drawer refinishing and restoration is almost always a great idea, especially if you are a homeowner. On larger kitchen renovations, the homeowner will generally recoup (return on investment) about 60% of budget. But on smaller renovation projects, the ROI is much larger, around 81%! A well designed kitchen is nearly always worth the cost depending on your investment compared to value of home overall but it's clear that kitchens is where you should put home improvement efforts. If the smell of bacon, coffee, and morning banter, has ever pulled you from a dream like a rope tied around your belly, then you know what I'm speaking of.
